CHILD-FRIENDLY MEDIA

Thisday, the child friendly medium
THISDAY, Winner, CHILD-FRIENDLY MEDIA at the 17th DAME
On the face of it, Thisday does not come across as a paper that gives close attention to issues concerning the Nigerian child. Politics and business would appear to hold a stronger appeal to the men and women at Apapa, location of its corporate headquarters.

On closer look, borne out by empirical evidence, Thisday pays a keen attention to the welfare of the Nigerian child. In 2007, the volume of stories published by Thisday alone on the subject of child welfare conveys a picture of an average of one story daily. 433 stories were published, of which 317 were news reports, 18 opinions, and 98 features. Their contents ranged from child trafficking, to basic education, HIV/AIDS, child survival, and nutrition.

Thisday did not win this award by sheer volume of publications, rather the quality of writing and depth of mastery stood the stories out. It is the first time Thisday would be winning this category of DAME.
