Sikiru Adeoye-Yusuf sometimes courts trouble for himself while taking shots for his paper. His winning shot at the 14th DAME, “When Cow mothers little boy” almost earned him a beating from itinerant herdsmen. They did not want him to take the shot of a little boy sucking milk directly from the teats of a cow.
His winning entry this year, “Police Brutality” published April 21, 2006 courted trouble for him again. He and other journalists had gone to cover the Constitutional Review Panel's sitting in Osogbo, Osun State. While the sitting was going on inside the Osun State House of Assembly, protesters against the alleged Third Term bid of former President Olusegun Obasanjo were outside the Assembly Complex with placards chanting and singing against the bid. Policemen in the bid to stop the protesters assaulted them, kicking and whipping them.
Yusuf positioned himself, taking shots of what was going on. The policemen sighted him and seized the camera and removed the film in it. Unknown to them, he also took the shots with his digital camera. The picture shows the protesters lying flat on the bare floor, some of them being kicked by policemen. Yusuf, an assistant editor in charge of photography at the Nigerian Tribune, holds a Diploma in Journalism from the International Institute of Journalism and a certificate in Photo Communication from Gaff Institute of Photography. This is the third time Yusuf is winning the Action Photography prize, having won it in 2000 and 2005.
