Reuben Abati, chairman, editorial board of Guardian newspapers, is an accomplished and fulfilled journalist and columnist. The columns he writes in The Guardian on Fridays and Sundays give compelling insights into public affairs.
His winning entry, “Spotty, a condolence letter” was picked as the most informed commentary in 2004. Deep and witty, it shows Abati at his engaging best.
Born on November 7, 1965, Dr. Abati read Theatre Arts at the University of Calabar and graduated in 1985 with a second class upper degree. After his youth service, he quickly enrolled for his masters in 1987 and followed that with a doctoral degree in 1990.
He was a lecturer in some universities in Nigeria before his foray into journalism. He cut his teeth in journalism at Hints and Channelle magazines where he was a contributing editor from 1989 to 1991. He joined The Guardian in 1991 as a member of the editorial board. Today, he chairs deliberations of that board.
Widely travelled, he was a Hubert H. Humphrey fellow at the University of Maryland, USA, 1996-1997, Fellow, St. John College, Cambridge, University, UK. A member of the Association of Nigeria Authors (ANA), he co-authored with Sesan Ajayi, the biography of T.A Odutola.
Winning the award in this category for the third time exactly two days to his 40th birthday is an appropriate gift for one of Nigeria’s most respected informed commentators.
