SPORTS REPORTING

A wake up call
Ehimare Oseghale, Winner, SPORTS REPORTING, at the 17th DAME
This year’s winning work in the Sports Reporting category, “A dream in ruins”, speaks volume of government penchant for abandoning projects. The report presents a horrible picture of a project that could have given Nigerian sports men and women the needed footing in international competitions.

The Afuze Olympic Games village in Edo State was conceived over two decades ago as a specialised centre for the grooming and training of Nigerian athletes for major competitions like the All African games (AAG), Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games but 23 years after, it remains only a dream, what's more, a dying dream.

Written by Ehimare Oseghale and published in the September 10 edition of Tell, the story presents a picture of a place overgrown with weeds and a comfortable home to rodents, snakes and other dangerous creatures with facilities in the games village in a total state of disrepair.

Born November 7, 1964, Oseghale attended Abia State University, Uturu, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. He had worked in many reputable establishments including Unilever plc and Capital Bancorp before joining Tell magazine in 2000 as a reporter.

He is a past winner of DAME in the same category in 2005.
