The fear of EFCC
Albert Ohams, Winner, EDITORIAL CARTOONING, at the 17th DAME
Editorial cartoonists have many of the same qualities as a good reporter and columnist. They look at varousl angles of an issue and try to present them in an impactful way. This was the style employed by Albert Ohams when he depicted the activities of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the popular Osodi bus stop in Lagos. Ohams figuratively showed that the mere mention of EFCC could send shivers down the spine of people that have skeletons in their Cupboards. Published in the Sun newspaper of July 22, 2007, the cartoon showed that there was pandemonium at the ever busy Osodi when it was learnt that the commission was in the area.
Ohams's entry scored high marks in concept, idea, presentation and humour.
Born August 30, 1965 in Kumba , Cameroon, Ohams attended Bishop Shanahan College, Orlu, Imo state between 1975 and 1980. He gained admission into Yaba College of Technology to study General Arts in 1988 at the National Diploma level and later enrolled for his Higher National Diploma in Fine Arts in the same institution.
He started his career in editorial cartooning in 1982 when he joined Daily Nation newspapers in Aba. From there, he moved on to Vanguard in 1984 and later joined Prime People magazine as its cartoon editor. He joined Champion newspapers in 1998 as chief cartoonist, from where he moved to The Sun as cartoon editor.
