A Queer Passion, the winning work for this year’s DAME Press Reporter of the Year prize, is about the rising cases of lesbianism and homosexuality in Nigeria particularly among youths.
Written by Kazeem Akintunde and published in the November 29 edition of Tell, the story exposes how politicians and reputable businessmen who enjoy the act, lure youths into the practice. Detailed and probing, the story established that the act, which Akintunde described as a scourge, is already spreading to primary and secondary schools where gay and lesbian groups are known to exist.
The judges found the story a good piece of investigation and well written enough to merit the award in that category.
Akintunde attended the Ogun State Polytechnic now Moshood Abiola polytechnic for his National Diploma and Higher National Diploma and holds a Masters in Legal Studies from the Lagos State University, Ojo.
He had worked with the defunct Anchor newspaper as a Senior Correspondent and The Week as a Senior Staff Writer. He is currently a Staff Writer with Tell, the people’s parliament.
