Emmanuel Uffot’s winning work, Bank Mergers, acquisitions raise spectre of monopolies, examines the looming fear of the industry returning to the era of monopolies as the industry embarks on mergers and acquisitions to meet the new capital base requirement. The report, published in Leadership newspaper of December 5 2004, highlighted the several forced marriages that would be consummated by banks in order to meet the target. It looked at the dangers that may arise from such marriages which may eventually see the industry returning to the monopolistic market, of the 70s and 80s. DAME Judges singled the story out for commendation on the basis of its depth of investigation and relevance.
