DAME HOLDS 20th PRESENTATION SUNDAY
Two Lifetime Achievement Awards and 25 merit prizes will be awarded
for outstanding work in various categories spanning print journalism,
advertising and broadcasting at the 20th edition of the annual Diamond
Awards for Media Excellence on Sunday.
The Lifetime Awardees are the late Mr. Alex Ibru, publisher of the
Guardian for his contributions to the growth of the print journalism
sector through the establishment in 1983 and nurturing of the Guardian
to a position of eminence and Prof. Alfred Opubor, Africa's first
professor of public communications, for his prodigious contributions
to media education and development.
It is the first time that DAME would award posthumous awards in the
Lifetime achievement category, which until now had been bestowed on
eleven Nigerians. The DAME secretariat, in a statement, explained that
both men were among a shortlist of five Nigerians recommended a month
ago for the honour.
The25 merit awards will be given for outstanding works in such
categories as the Newspaper of the Decade, Television Reporting, Radio
Reporting, Action Photography, Press Advertising, Agriculture
Reporting, Television commercials, Health Reporting and Development
Reporting.
The event, billed for the Lagos Sheraton, Ikeja, provides a platform
to encourage the media to tread the path of ethical responsibility by
honouring enterprise, talent and the pursuit of excellence. It also
serves as a reunion for media professionals to reflect on the state of
the media.
First held on March 20, 1992, DAME emphasises its independence as a
private, not for profit trust wholly dedicated to the development of
the Nigerian media.
