DAME HOLDS PRESENTATION DECEMBER 11

The 20th edition of the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence will hold Sunday, December 11 at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers, Ikeja. A statement from the DAME secretariat says 23 prizes will be awarded to deserving individuals and organisations in the fields of print journalism, broadcasting and advertising.

Established on March 19, 1991 as a private initiative to reward talent, enterprise, and excellence in public communications, DAME holds that such initiatives will stimulate development and responsibility in the media. DAME held its first edition on March 20, 1992 and has consistently offered an annual platform to honour excellence in the industry and give a state-of-the-media assessment.

Individuals and organisations who believe in the power of the media as potent agents of development fund DAME. Past DAME winners—410 to date—can be found in key gate-keeping positions in the media as editors, columnists, reporters, producers, copy and scriptwriters, photographers, artists, cartoonists, administrators and directors.

DAME Judges are usually are drawn from the academia, the media and civil society. Assessors for the 20th edition include three media trainers, Prof. Nosa Owens Ibie of Caleb University, Messrs. Muda Ganiyu, Bisi Olawunmi, respectively of the Lagos Polytechnic and Bowen University; and veteran journalists such Ben Lawrence, Taiwo Obileye, Tunde Thompson, and Muyiwa Adetiba. Two photographers, Tam Fiofori and Victor Agunbiade, and two advertising practitioners, Joseph Afolabi and Gbemi Sagay, also served. Others were five women, Mrs. Agbeke Ogunsanwo, Ms. Bunmi Sofola, Mrs. Tinu Odugbemi, Ms. Efiom Asuquo, and Mrs. Wale Sokunbi. Messrs. Jimi Disu, Feyi Smith and Gbolahan Gbadamosi complete the team.

Her trustees are core professionals, ranging from Mr. Lanre Idowu, CEO Diamond Publications, to Mallam Kabir Yusuf, chairman Media Trust, to Mrs. Remi Oyo, managing director, News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Olu Ajomale, chartered accountant, and two former diplomats, Mr. Moses Ihonde, and the Wakilin Adamawa, Dr. Hassan Adamu.
